Sasuke was born into one of Konoha's most prestigious clans, the Uchiha clan. The younger of two siblings, he wasn't as pressured as Itachi was by their father, and was spoiled more by his mother. He spent his early childhood looking up to Itachi as an idol, and as something to aspire towards, despite how little attention he got from him. At the age of eight, he entered the shinobi academy, learned his first katon jutsu, and was submitted to the tortures of the Tsukiyomi upon returning home one night to find his entire clan massacred.

The illusion Itachi had been keeping up of the caring older brother was dissolved before his eyes, but even then he didn't want to believe it. He listened in fear as the murderer of his clan revealed that he had killed Shisui to gain the Mangekyou Sharingan, and that Sasuke would have to kill his best friend to gain it as well. "Run. Run, cling to your pathetic life and hate me, and someday come before me with these same eyes and kill me," Itachi had said, explaining that he'd killed the clan simply to see if he could, and that he spared Sasuke because he was not worth killing, though he was the only one of them who could possibly surpass him in the future.

He vowed then that he would avenge his family by putting an end to their murderer, swearing death upon his own brother.

During the next four years, he trained himself, working hard at the academy and coming out of it at the top of his class. Upon graduation, he was placed in a team with Haruno Sakura and Uzumaki Naruto under the care of Hatake Kakashi, which is where he revealed his intentions to the group ("the resurrection of my clan, and to kill a certain man"). Considering Naruto's personality and need for attention, he and Sasuke became quick rivals and soon friends. During their first high-ranked mission, he gained use of his clan's unique trait, the Sharingan, while battling against Haku, the apprentice of an S-Ranked nukenin (missing nin) from Kirigakure. In this same fight, he was placed into a state of temporary death by Haku's expert use of senbon, while trying to block the boy's attacks from hitting Naruto. He told the blond then that he didn't know why he saved him, and that his body simply moved on its own, as well as the fact that the man he wanted to kill was indeed his brother.

Later that year, he participated in the Chuunin exams, forming a quick rivalry against a boy from Suna who called himself Gaara. Before the first test of the exam, he met with the team under Kakashi's rival Maito Gai, engaging Rock Lee (a taijutsu expert) in combat and losing rather badly. During the second test of the exams, they were sent into a training grounds known as the Forest of Death, in which team 7 encountered Orochimaru, one of the legendary three and also an S-Ranked nukenin from Konoha. Afraid to fight him due to the immense power he exuded, Sasuke nearly gave up, but Naruto's intervention brought the fight back to him. Despite fighting with his all, Orochimaru still came out on top, placing a curse seal on Sasuke's neck and leaving with the promise that Sasuke would come to him seeking power.

The curse seal itself was painful enough that he passed out shortly after receiving it. Later, while other ninja from Orochimaru's self-made village (Otogakure) made an attempt on Sasuke's life, he awoke, the power of the curse seal causing a temporary insanity and bloodlust in him that nearly caused him to kill the three members of Oto, before Sakura managed to break him out of the spell. Later, after his fight with an undercover Oto ninja in the preliminary rounds of the third and final test, Kakashi placed a seal over the curse seal to help Sasuke control it (though it would cease to be of any use if he willingly released the seal).

In the final rounds of the exam, he was matched up against Gaara, before the finalists were given one month to train before the tournament commenced. During this month, Kakashi trained him directly, teaching him his one signature move, Chidori. He was almost late enough to his fight with Gaara to be disqualified, but when he finally arrived, the match commenced. With the help of his Sharingan, he managed to land a blow on Gaara through his absolute defense, though this triggered the beginning of Gaara's transformation into Shukaku. Despite Kakashi's warning that he could only use Chidori twice in one day, in the fight that followed, he tried to force a third shot, drawing on the power of the curse seal and still failing. In the end, he was forced to watch as Naruto managed to defeat Gaara on his own, this dealing a huge blow to his pride.

Shortly afterward, news of Itachi searching for Naruto reached him, and he went searching for him. Upon finding his brother, he made an attempt on his life, but was defeated easily despite his progress and subjected again to the tortures of the Tsukiyomi. This time, he ended up in a coma, and remained in that state until Naruto and Jiraiya found Tsunade, who healed him.

After being healed, however, he challenged Naruto to a fight, which ended in both of them using their newest and deadliest techniques (which were deflected by Kakashi's intervention). After seeing the damage done by Naruto's Rasengan as compared to his Chidori, he questioned thoroughly what he'd been doing all this time that he was falling behind and not getting any better while Naruto had become so much stronger.

Followed by Kakashi, he was submitted to a lecture, after which he was confronted by four of Orochimaru's henchmen and presented an offer. After little thought, he accepted, leaving Konoha that night with the four in order to gain the power he needed to kill Itachi from Orochimaru. On his way out of the village, however, Sakura tried to stop him, confessing her love for him. Despite her efforts, however, his only answer was a "thank you" and a swift blow to the back of her neck to knock her out (this one scene may have hinted that he actually did care slightly for her).

Once they were a good way out of the village, the four gave him a pill that advanced the curse seal to level two, though it also required him to die for a short time. As the curse seal developed, he was sealed in a barrel as the four continued along in order to deliver him to Orochimaru, who sought to use his body as a container to sustain his immortality and gain the Sharingan.

Upon leaving the barrel, he was followed by Naruto to the Valley of the End, where the two fought with all they had. Sasuke remembered his brother's words then ("To gain this power, you must kill your closest friend"), going as far as to release the curse seal to level 2 in order to stop Naruto from following him, though in the end, he spared the boy's life ("on a whim"). He vowed that he would gain power in his own way, rather than how Itachi told him to.

Two and a half years after joining Orochimaru, Sasuke became considerably more powerful, being confronted by Naruto at Orochimaru's lair and easily bringing the entire team (now consisting of Yamato, Sai, Naruto and Sakura) to their knees before Orochimaru stepped in and stopped him from killing them all to prove that he'd broken his ties with them (why, we're not sure). Despite knowing that Orochimaru was only interested in obtaining the Sharingan from him, he continued to remain with him, though he seemed to have his own agenda regarding the sannin's plans and has not given up the path of avenger, though he admitted that as he was, he was still not yet strong enough to defeat Itachi.

Shortly after the confrontation with Naruto, as Orochimaru was running out of time in his current body and becoming weaker, Sasuke outright attacked him. In the sannin's weakened state, Sasuke seemed to have the upper hand, preaching to the snake about how the Uchiha name would always be superior to even those considered genius by normal people. After shedding his body for his true form (a white snake beast), Orochimaru made an attempt to transfer to Sasuke's body, but while inside the dimension the sannin created, Sasuke used the Sharingan to turn the tables, pushing the man back and gaining control.

With Orochimaru defeated, Sasuke began gathering himself a team in order to pursue Itachi. The first of the unruly three (later to be named Team Hebi) was Suigetsu (Zabuza's protege), whom he freed from a watery containment. Second came Karin, who had an obvious crush on him along with an acute ability to sense chakra signatures. Third was Juugo, the origin of the curse seal. After gathering and taming the bunch (which basically consisted of keeping them from each other's throats), they set out to prepare for the upcoming battles at an old weapons house that the Uchiha clan used to use.

After a brief talk with the matriarch of the place, they left, splitting up shortly after in order to find clues to the Akatsuki's wherabouts.

Shortly after splitting up, however, Deidara and Tobi came across Sasuke alone. Faking the disadvantage several times, Sasuke managed to gain the upper hand against Deidara, questioning him about Itachi. In the end, he received no answers, barely managing to escape Deidara's self explosion by summoning Manda (using genjutsu to control him) and using a "space jutsu" (wtf Kishimoto?) to "fly" to another space.

Certainly not coming out of the battle unscathed, he rejoined the rest of Team Hebi in order to rest up and heal. Shortly after that, he took what information the others had gained about the Akatsuki's hideouts and, thanks to the healing powers of the white snake, was able to cut his rest short at the news of Naruto's team closing in.
